His readings are informed by the biblical text and the Midrash, and are overwhelmingly concerned with gaps and questions about human and godly nature in the texts. Why does Job accept G-d’s “answer” to the source of his sufferings; why is Joseph a zaddik when he is so crass and pragmatic?

Wiesel reads these stories very differently than I do. For me, the literal elements of the biblical stories are the least interesting. The mystical dimension is the goal; the details of the bible are only, but not exclusively, stepping stones to greater realities.

But it is informative to read Wiesel struggle with the texts. It is certainly a deeply tradition Jewish concern.

Easily one of the best writers on the planet provides humble, yet evocative, superb, yet hopeful stories of the Hebrew Bible's most significantly remembered men. This book will bring the Old Testament alive to you!
I had this book. Loaned it out. It never came back. I missed it enough that I ordered a replacement copy. The writings are so powerful that I remembered them and thought about them often during the long time when I did not possess the book. Jewish, Muslim and Christian readers will be challenged (and delighted) to peer beneath the depths with Wiesel's masterful and compelling writing and will never think of Isaac and Abraham, and the other patriarchs as well in the same ways.
