Starship First Steps to Empire eBook R J Murray

The Star ship Pathfinder had a mission, to find a new world for a Human colony. At first, Captain Eric Maddwell was alone on his journey. His search had lasted almost two and a half years and had turned up dead planets or useless gas giants. His discovery of a drifting alien ship almost identical to his own began a mystery and a quest that could save mankind.

I enjoyed the book, and found it both entertaining and interesting. I liked the characters and the story. In response to many complaints on needing an editor... I found a few places where a word seemed to be missing, but not enough to make a big deal about it.
Why not 5 stars? To prevent spoilers, I'll just say that with the revelation around 80% through the novel, I was not sure why there were no ramifications or implications for us going it on our own. I'll leave it at that. That seemed like a plot hole.

Starship First Steps to Empire eBook R J Murray Reviews
Easy read that is not big on hard science but makes a plausible stab at political science. I read it in 24 hours. Looking forward to the sequel.
Not an usual scenario, lone spacer with high IQ, inquisitive, skilled, adaptive and humble goes on to lead a fleet and colonize a new planet. Some interesting aliens, battles and new technology. I liked the story and the main character a lot. Yes the book could use some editing but that does not keep it from being a fun read. There are more then one plot twist so enjoy!
I enjoyed the story. It was a quick read, too. Good price.
Grammar, spelling and typographical errors throughout. Also missing words in sentences.
Perhaps the author could focus on editing in the next one
I will buy the next instalment of this series, anyway.
I have read this book three (3) times so far. Caught something new each time. Logical in many ways, has some implausible happenings, some unbelievable happenings, but it also works for some reason. Will read it again and again. Just plain fun and a good escape from television. If you read and liked Larry Biden's Ringworld, you will like this bok.
This book is not perfect editing is spotty, flow is occasionally awkward, and the politics are heavy handed. But overall, it works. The action is fairly steady, the exploration and universe building is good, the main character grows and so does society. Violence is fairly low, but it is present. Alien mixture is intriguing as is the building of tensions. Recommended
The interesting plot led me to read about 28% of the book, but I finally couldn't take any more.
The first chapter reads fairly well; the focus on one character is good, and the plot at this point is very simple and it works. But soon the basic writing errors start piling up. Incorrect or missing punctuation, incomplete sentences, unclear references - all soon are established as recurring features. Each instance of these errors results in a lack of clarity; at each I had to pause in my reading to untangle the meaning, instead of remaining immersed in the flow of the story.
Ultimately, though, there were two larger - and related - problems which caused me to stop reading. The first was the writing eventually dropped nearly all descriptive text in favor of...people talking. Endlessly. Page after page after page of characters talking. And not just talking; most of it is "info dumps". What this means is that there is very little sense of what theses places or people are actually like. There is some cursory visual description, but little that brings it alive for the reader.
This leads to the second large problem; the complexity of the plot many ships, multiple species, multiple planetary systems. Don't get me wrong I like complexity. But these story elements are introduced with little description or context; they are introduced almost entirely through the above mentioned dialogue-based info dumps. Having to spend a lot of energy memorizing what ship is where and with who on it quickly becomes tedious.
Finally, between that and the endless dialogue, I lost interest.
The author has a flair for plotting, which I admire and which is a great foundation for a book. And the writing has energy, which is also good. But the author has other key skills and technique which need serious work.
Enjoyed this book immensely - I don't care about the odd spelling / grammar mistake - I read and review a book based on its story. This was a great read ! Believable characters and plot, humour and everything else needed to make a story you want to read right through to the end. Would really like a sequel!
